The Bad Apple

I love cheeseburgers.

Honestly, the word "love" does not adequately describe my feelings toward a good, juicy burger; it is really more of an uncontrollable obsession. As a huge fanatic of "ethnic" food, a burger is just about the only thing I willingly consume at an American restaurant.

That being said, I have probably consumed hundreds of burgers in my life, and it is rare that a burger meets my expectations.

The "Grizzly Adams" at The Bad Apple, however, went above and beyond.

Choosing the Grizzly Adams from the extensive burger menu at The Bad Apple was a no-brainer, really. I will always go for a pretzel bun on my burger if given the option, and cheddar is easily one of my favorite cheeses to put on my burger. Mustard is one of my favorite condiments, I'm obsessed with onions in any form (from straight-up raw to caramelized), and above all, my favorite pastime is to pile red meat on red meat and then eat all of it. As you could imagine, the braised short rib really sealed the deal.

The burger was perfect, cooked to a perfect medium. Dare I say it is the best burger I have ever had in Chicago?

If you are not crazy about red meat but are an avid beer drinker, the good news is that The Bad Apple is primarily a bar and thus their beer menu is even more extensive. I had a few sips of one of their chocolate stouts and it was one of the only beers I've tasted that didn't make me want to vomit (coming from an alcohol intolerant, this means it was delicious).

The only problem I had with this fine establishment was their homemade ketchup. I suppose in the greater scheme of things, the taste wasn't terrible; it tasted like crushed, unseasoned tomatoes mixed with vinegar. However, the fact that I was expecting ketchup and got this concoction instead made it taste like ass. I will be taking ketchup with me next time I visit, and if you have grown to love the processed, high fructose corn syrup-laden taste of Heinz ketchup the way I have, I would advise that you do the same.
